The Interview

Hey, this blog is about the interview I had with Fraser. I asked him 6 questions and he gave me some interesting answers.
What project are you doing?
My project is exploring the decline of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.

What tools will you use to complete you project?
I am using a computer modeling program known as Stella. This will hopefully recreate the events that led to the decline in the oyster population.

Who or what are your resources?
My mother is a computer modeler and she will teach me to use the program. My data that I will need to create the model would come from horn point.
Why are you doing this project?
The question I want to answer is new. Nobody has yet done a model to explore this. It is a good project for stem as well as other places such as college applications. It’s also an interesting topic.
How will you fund this?
This will require little funding because most of the instruments that I will need I already own. The rest I can probably borrow.

Will this be a long term or short term project?
It will be long term. I plan to build on this model and make it more and more complicated and accurate as time goes on.

Thought For The Project

How's everyone doing on their project? I think I'm pretty sure on what I would like to do. I want to study two or three different types of prokaryotic cells in, different environments of temperature and climate.Though, I am still thinking of other things I would like to test the cells on. Before I do test on this, I must learn a technique that Mrs. Robinson told me about but I can't remember the name of. I think my project will turn out pretty cool.

Stem Embryonic Cells : o

Hey everyone, I finally got some research done on stem embryonic cells that Pres. Obama put funding back on for research. What I've learned is really cool and I think you all should check it out. Embryonic stem cell (ES cells) are stem cells derived from the inner cell mass from an early stage embryo known as the plasticity. They are mostly found in multi cellular organisms. Stem cells are characterized by their ability to renew themselves by mitotic cell division. They differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types. ES cells are one of two types of mammalian stem cells that are most broad. Because of their plasticity and potentially unlimited capacity for self-renewal, ES cell therapies have been proposed for regenerative medicine and tissue replacement after injury or disease. The funding put into ES cell research could possibly cure many dangerous viruses and diseases and change the future of medicine. I believe this was an excellent idea for Pres. Obama to do it shows what mistakes he's correcting from formal Pres. Bush and help change the future. I also believe that Bush let his ethnic beliefs get in the way of him doing his job causing him to believe that using embryos for this matter is morally wrong. But hey, this is my opinion towards this subject.

Something Interesting From The TV

Hey everyone, I was doing math homework earlier today and my mom was in the living room watching tv. After I finished my work a news update came up on President Obama about him putting fundings on stem cell embryo research. I don't remember much that but it sounded very interesting to me so I just might look in to that and blog back to you all about it. That's all for now.

The hurricane I researched using the GIS system was Hurricane Ivan. This hurricane occurred for 22 days from 2nd of September, 2004 to the 24th of September, 2004. It first made landfall on southern Alabama and it was a category 3 hurricane. Ivan’s latitude and longitude was 87.8502 degrees North and 30.38749 degrees West. This hurricane went through and impacted Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Florida, and Texas. The buffer of Hurricane Ivan was 188.342 miles wide. Using GIS technology and spatial analysis has increased my knowledge of how much of a continent can be impacted by a hurricane and how far they can travel over a month long period. Sadly I have not been able to upload my picture of hurricane Ivan yet. I will update everyone as soon as I get some help.
